#395 Merry Christmas

Season’s greetings from where I write, in a warm and sunny Australia.   I’m glad you enjoyed the “12 Days of Christmas” images, as much as I loved sharing them with you.  Also, thank you so much for your messages of support during the past year.  Believe me, it’s always very uplifting to read that so many of you, across so many cultures, in so many countries...

#394 12 Drummers Drumming (1994)

This is one of the most colorful images in the “12 Days of Christmas” series, and of course really is the grand finale!  So we went all out to make the drums unique and colorful, not to mention the beautiful detail in the costumes.  I especially loved the hats with their chin-straps, and was a little surprised that everyone was quite happy to wear them.  I seem to...

#393 11 PIPERS PIPING (1994)

My “11 Pipers” are all interpreted as little angels on clouds, and I can attest for the fact that the “pipe” received a very good-work out on the day (mainly being drooled over, or thrown on the floor). The “cloud” is sitting on a solid wooden base and the image was computer-generated afterwards. Composite images like this are a lot easier to shoot, especially...

#392 10 Lords a Leaping (1994)

I used a beautiful antique rocking horse for this image, and the costumes the babies were wearing were just a delight.  Obviously this image has been computer generated, and my assistants were holding the babies as they sat on the rocking horse.  I’ve included an extra image here to show how it was done.  The 3 babies in the extra image were the only 3 who were...

#391 Nine Ladies Dancing (1994)

9 beautiful “belles” of the ball! Although, as I recall, there were a couple of boys in the group, but I’m sure I dressed them in blue. They all look like small Christmas puddings don’t you think? And I especially love the little one in the middle sucking her thumb. In my autobiography, “A Labor of Love”, when I was talking about the time we were shooting this...

#390 Eight Maids a Milking

8 MAIDS a MILKING (1994) Milkmaids in milk buckets – a perfect combination! I often find that simple solutions to a concept can make it the most impactful, and as I’ve mentioned many times, I simply love working with babies this age … they can be real characters. We used just one milk bucket, 8 different six-month-olds and (almost) everyone was happy to play their...

#389 Seven swans a swimming

7 SWANS a SWIMMING (1994) Here’s the story I mentioned earlier, about how we obtained most of the feathers for this series.  Around this time I was also in the planning stages to shoot an “Angel” calendar.  Knowing that I would need lots of feathers over the coming months, somebody had the bright idea that we could contact some local chicken farmers and...

#388 6 Geese a Laying (1994)

Of course the little 6-month-old “geese” required golden eggs!  It’s pretty obvious as to how this image was done, and each baby was photographed separately.  I love working with babies this age as they are so charming and interactive, and they can be incredibly funny.  The eggs (securely bolted on to a base board) were lined with soft fabric, and big enough to...

#387 Five Gold Rings (1994)

There was one large “gold ring”, I suspect created from a rubber tube, but I can’t quite recall that detail.  The ring was lined with soft foam and the gold fabric wrapped around.  We changed the detail with the gold bows as each baby was photographed, and each time a new baby was on set we would place a new piece of gold fabric beneath them.  I am always very...

#386 Four Calling Birds (1994)

Four “calling” birds, to me naturally required a telephone.   It isn’t easy to hold the attention of four six-month-old babies (who are wearing bird outfits), and when we were shooting this image, my Studio Manager Natalie, whose job it was to try to keep their attention, was extended to her full capacity.  She told me later that she had a small surreal moment...

#385 Three French Hens

3 FRENCH HENS (1994) I’ve always felt that this image is the sweetest and most endearing of the “12 Days of Christmas” series.  Everything is real, meaning no computer generation has been done.  The eggs are very large props, and the French hen costumes were made with real exotic chicken feathers.  These feathers were expertly adhered to three, especially...

#384 Tragedy

Just woke up this morning in Sydney, to the terrible news of another school shooting in the United States, and watched President Obama’s eloquent and emotional address.  Yes, we will all hug our children closer for sure and tell them we love them every day.  When will this madness end?  Every parent in the world would be weeping today for those families who have lost...

#383 Two Turtle Doves

“2 TURTLE DOVES” As is often the case with me, once I start with a simple idea it can invariably become something else completely, and the “12 Days of Christmas” series is a great example of this.  The entire series, which was shot over a 6-month period, required much creative planning and very comprehensive prop making.  I especially wanted to capture in each...

#382 On the first day of christmas…

Welcome to our very special way of counting the days until Christmas.  If you celebrate Christmas in your home, I’m sure you have some special family traditions that you look forward to every year.  For instance my daughter Stephanie always makes the rum balls (I think she never puts enough rum in them, but she resists!) and she and I always make our favorite classic...

Happy Thanksgiving holiday to everybody in the United States.
