ANNE TALKS ABOUT HER BABY CLOTHING
 |
I've been approached for years by companies suggesting that I do something like
this. Some manufacturers would create sample items, and they were nice, but they
just weren't what I would do. Then I thought, I've spoken to more than 2,000 mothers
over the last 15 years, dressed and undressed many babies, and I know what mothers
and babies want in their clothing. Keeping babies comfortable and helping enhance
their natural beauty is an integral part of my work. I felt I could translate my
unique knowledge of babies into creating something very special.

The line was designed following a very clear vision - mine. I've seen too many parents
struggling with their child's outfits in the studio. I've felt too many scratchy
blankets in the shops. We know that babies don't like things being pulled over their
heads, and that parents need fastenings that are easy to open and close, and won't
pinch. We created the clothing to meet these needs, and filled the line with soft
luxurious fabrics, stylish designs, and many practical little extras. Just because
you're a baby, doesn't mean you can't be stylish.

If there are items in the range that say 'Anne Geddes baby, ' I think they are the
Bear Suit and the Bunny Suit, with their distinctive approach to quality, extra
detailing, and linings. I've envisioned the cuddly Bear Suit many times, and am
so pleased with the translation of my design into a soft, delightful outfit that
highlights each baby's loveliness. The Bunny Suit features those little ears, the
fluffy tail, and the padded bottom. We all agreed that it's the only time in your
life when you can get away with having a padded bottom and still look cute.

One of my favorite ages to photograph is newborns. It has been my great privilege
to have had a number of extremely tiny babies in the studio, so it was essential
to me, when designing my own range, that these extra special little ones were not
overlooked. I created the "Newborn" size range for infants weighing four to seven
pounds, or 1.8 to 3.2 kilograms. Often, with a smaller newborn, clothing and baby
wraps overwhelm them. I felt it was very important for especially tiny or premature
babies to have comfortable, soft clothing that fits, was easy to change, and that
they looked beautiful in when their moms and dads proudly brought them home from
the hospital.

It's all mix and match, so a number of cozy, well-crafted pieces can be combined
in different ways to create a variety of outfits. I like the fact that our featured
colors-dusty rose pink, soft sky blue, warm caramel, and creamy bunny yellow-are
not too bright or predictable.
In all the research that we did, I found boys' clothing to be a little conventional.
If you've got a boy, there's often not a lot around to choose from. I'm pleased
that mothers can come into this range and make their young man look fabulous as
well.

I'm enjoying the continuing process of using my images as an inspiration to create
baby clothing and accessories, as well as designing for every season of the year
as experienced in different parts of the world. A special element of this process
is the feedback we receive from mothers, fathers, grandparents, and friends. Their
stories and comments are so uplifting and precious to me because they speak straight
from their hearts. I'm very moved by the depth of feeling they share.

There are a number of items that have personal stories attached to them, and one
of them is the Anne Geddes Studio Blanket. It's the same blanket that I have used
in the studio for years during my photo shoots, and it was a natural progression
for me to include it in the range.
People ask me all the time how I get newborn babies to sleep. I don't have a magic
formula, but I do have the Studio Blanket. You see, textured blankets tend to leave
marks on a naked baby's sensitive skin that take at least ten minutes to fade once
the blanket is removed - a big problem for me when I'm photographing. We thought,
we have to beat this. Our solution was to make our own. My flannel blanket is extra
large, so babies can be wrapped nice and securely, and they don't kick it off. It
allows the babies' skin to breathe, helps prevent overheating, and best of all,
leaves their tiny body looking as perfect as the day they were born.
